Four Ways Your Dentist Can Help You With Chipped Teeth

Dentist Blog

If you chip your tooth, the damage may be superficial. But if the chip is deep, it may require a trip to the dentist. Dental work isn't just about fixing cavities and preventing tooth decay. If you have chipped teeth, there are a number of ways that your dentist can help.

Here are four ways your dentist can help with chipped teeth:

1. Your Dentist Can Evaluate The Extent Of Your Injury

If you have chipped your tooth in an accident, it is important to check your teeth and jaw before fixing the chip. Your dentist will first evaluate the extent of your injury. They will check for any damage to the nerves or roots of your tooth. Your dentist may also want to examine your jawbone to make sure it hasn't been damaged in any way.

2. Your Dentist Can Fix Small Chips

If the chip is small, your dentist may be able to fix it using dental fillings. This type of filling is made from metal alloys or porcelain and is used to fill in small holes or cracks in teeth. The material used depends on the size of the chip and how deep it goes into the tooth's enamel layer. The process only takes a few minutes and works well for shallow chips that don't go past the enamel layer of teeth.

3. Your Dentist Can Repair Deeper Chips

Repairing deeper chips requires more complex procedures, such as crowns or veneers, which require more time and materials like porcelain fused to metal (PFM). These are custom-made by your dentist, who attaches them over damaged areas so they blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile while still retaining the functionality of your teeth.

4. Your Dentist Can Replace Any Missing Filling

Sometimes it's not just the original tooth that gets chipped, but the fillings. If you lost part of your filling while eating an apple or other hard food, then you should see your dentist right away. They will remove any remaining pieces and fill in the gap with more composite resin material that matches the rest of your teeth. During this process, your dentist may also remove any remaining decay and clean out infection if there is any present in the area where the filling was lost.

If you have a chipped tooth, you should have it evaluated by your dentist as soon as possible. They will be able to tell you if any of your teeth have been damaged and if they need to be repaired. Talk with your dentist about chipped tooth repair options today.
