Establishing a Consistent Home Care Routine for Dental Implants

Dentist Blog

Everyone knows that taking proper care of teeth or dental implants is vitally important for long-term dental health, but most people wonder how to do so. A cosmetic dentist's help with dental care is very helpful in solving and preventing dental problems, but proper home care is the ultimate, lasting solution for enviable dental health.

Dental implants are surgically installed components that interface with the jaw bone to support a prosthesis. The dental prosthesis may be a denture, crown, bridge, or an anchor for orthodontic corrections. In modern practice, dental implants are installed through osseointegration, a procedure based in bone biology, through which implant materials such as titanium are intimately bonded to bone. Implants require less maintenance care compared to other dental solutions such as dentures, but they should not be neglected.

Patients with dental implants should establish consistency in home care by doing the following:

Brush and floss regularly

Since dental implants require as much care as the natural teeth, brushing and flossing is the primary way to ensure hygiene. Just like in normal circumstances, an individual with dental implants should brush their teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. Consistency in brushing and flossing can keep implants hygienic and free from infection.

Select the appropriate brushing and flossing products

When you get dental implants, your cosmetic dentist will most likely prescribe the appropriate toothpaste, toothbrush and dental floss for you. The toothpaste should be non-abrasive, and products for teeth whitening should be avoided. Individuals with dental implants should use soft-bristled toothbrushes to avoid scratching any exposed implant surfaces. The dental floss used should not irritate the gums or stick to the teeth. Antimicrobial mouthwashes are also recommended to prevent possible infections.

Maintain a healthy diet

A healthy diet is vital for proper dental health. Sugary foods or beverages encourage bacterial growth, and may cause dental infections. Hard candies create exposure to sugar, but may also put strain and tension on the implant, resulting to sensitivity and perhaps pain. Using teeth for the right purpose is an integral part of consistent home dental care.

Have regular dental checkups

A proper home care routine includes regular visits to the dentist. At the first sign of discomfort, pain or infection involving a dental implant, the patient should visit the dentist to get professional help.

Making a home care routine to maintain proper dental health may be challenging, but sticking with the basics can ensure that dental implants remain clean and safe from infection.
