Modern dental care is very advanced, deftly solving a multitude of problems which would have caused lifelong pain and discomfort in years gone by. It hasn't stopped developing, either; dentists continue to craft new and more effective solutions. But for many people, invasive and high-impact procedures are unthinkable, especially if you try to lead a natural lifestyle. Fortunately, there are options for you—both as preventative measures and as solutions to existing problems. Here are just a few.
Choose Toothpaste and Mouthwash Carefully
Many natural-leaning households choose to minimise their fluoride intake for health reasons. This is perfectly possible to do; there are many modern toothpastes and mouthwashes which are low in fluoride or contain no fluoride at all. However, if you do choose to limit your fluoride, you will need to compensate for this with additional cleaning. The reason fluoride is included in most mainstream dental products is that it has antibacterial properties and makes it much easier to keep your mouth clean and prevent cavities. As such, you'll want to make sure you work extra hard to replace those benefits. Otherwise, you'll end up requiring additional dental treatment which may offset the benefit gained by avoiding fluoride in the first place.
Whiten Teeth with Diet Changes and Coconut Oil
Professional tooth-whitening services use bleaches and acidic chemicals to restore your teeth to a bright white colour. It looks fantastic, but if you are concerned about the use of those chemicals, you can replicate the effects naturally. Firstly, you should reduce your coffee and sugar intake, as both of these contribute to teeth staining. You should also quit smoking if you are currently a smoker, as this will also yellow your teeth. With the right diet in place, your teeth should stay a nice natural colour by themselves—but swilling a teaspoon of coconut oil around your mouth every now and then will help too.
Fix Crooked Teeth without Braces
Orthodontic treatment is a huge part of dental care for both teenagers and adults. If you're self-conscious about the shape of your smile, then you may wish to straighten it out—but you might prefer to do so without a fixed brace. If so, a splint activator is an excellent option. These devices are like retainers which are worn over your teeth, and slowly guide them into a more pleasing position. There are no brackets to glue to your teeth, and you don't need to live with metal in your mouth for over a year. Choose a splint activator like Myobrace with individual tooth slots for a better fit.
As with every other area of your life, keeping your dentistry natural and holistic can be a little more difficult than sticking with mainstream products and practices—but that doesn't mean there aren't options out there for you. If it's something that's important to you, it's certainly worth the effort.Share
