Understanding Common Embarrassing Dental Conditions and their Solutions

Dentist Blog

Dental problems can cause pain and sensitivity, affecting the functionality of teeth. In simple terms you might experience difficulty in eating, drinking and talking when suffering from a tooth or gum disease. Unfortunately, there are oral conditions which affect more than the physical status of the body. Such conditions cause embarrassment in public, lowering personal self-esteem and the confidence to perform normal duties. Here are some of these common dental conditions and subsequent solutions.

Halitosis

Halitosis or bad breath is a major problem for numerous individuals. Poor breath can cause one to lose confidence when talking during normal activities and the oral cavity will feel sour and uncomfortable. If you are experiencing this oral issue, you should consider increasing your diligence in improving oral hygiene. The smell can come from deposits of food particles and oral bacteria which cause decomposition.

Brush your teeth regularly with a good brush and recommended freshening toothpaste to eliminate the material. Also, floss your teeth to remove deposits between the teeth because these decompose and escape the reach of the brush. In some cases, the halitosis might be as a result of a problem beyond dental wellness. If the problem persists, you should consult a doctor to examine you for other medical disorders like respiratory infections.

Decay and Cavities

Numerous individuals experience cavities due to teeth decay. Often, the damage is limited to a few teeth and the holes can be sealed using fillings. However, the decay might be widespread and recurrent. The affected teeth will experience discolouration and erosion, which often translates into shortening of teeth. If you are already experiencing the detriments of decay and cavities, you should consult a dentist for treatment.

You can prevent tooth decay by brushing your teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste. The fluoride re-mineralises the dental structure. You should also be more careful when selecting your food, especially snacks. Avoid acidic food and drinks such as soft drinks, citric fruits, tomatoes and pickles. Stomach acid can contribute to dental erosion, so you should seek treatment for diseases such as GERD and bulimia.

Receding Gums

Gum recession can be attributed to periodontal diseases. If an individual is affected by gingivitis and periodontitis, the gum will become swollen, red and prone to bleeding. Over time, the receding gum will be incapable of supporting teeth, so they will fall out. You can prevent these detriments by investing in good oral hygiene and visiting the dentist regularly for check-up and professional cleaning. If you have teeth grinding problems, consider using a nightguard for protection.
